💬 About us:
Who We Are

PEGS Cricket Club is a welcoming, community-first club built on the values of respect, camaraderie, and passion for the game. Based at the PEGS Sporting Complex in Keilor Park, we proudly field junior, senior, and social teams, offering opportunities for cricketers of all backgrounds and abilities to play the game they love.

Backed by the traditions of Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, our mission is to become Melbourne’s most supported local cricket club — where players thrive, families belong, and community spirit is at the heart of everything we do.

🏛 Our Story

  • PEGS Cricket Club began life in 1967 as the Old Essendon Grammarians Cricket Club (OEGCC). It was founded by Steve Kendall, a past student and teacher at Essendon Grammar’s junior school, who entered a team in the Essendon Broadmeadows Keilor Cricket Association (EBKCA) — a matting wicket competition at the time.

With a vision of one day competing on turf, Steve found an opportunity when PEGS purchased land at Keilor East for new sporting ovals. With the enthusiastic backing of school principal Bert Stevens, a passionate cricket supporter, Steve led the construction of turf wickets — even recruiting his Year 7 science students to help lay couch runners by hand.

  • In 1975/76, the club joined the all-turf Victorian Junior Cricket Association (VJCA) and immediately made its mark, winning its first flag in North B under the leadership of Bob McClennan, an ex-Australian hockey player.

With rising ambition, the club soon expanded to three teams and attracted serious talent. Under President Dr David Pitkin, the club signed ex-Australian Test cricketer Les Joslin — a move that, combined with the leadership of figures like Neville Fields and Denis Pagan, ushered in a golden era.

The club won back-to-back North A flags in 1982/83 and 1983/84, earning promotion to the Senior Division, and then claimed the Senior Division premierships in 1984/85 and 1986/87. This period set the foundations for PEGS CC as a destination for serious cricket with a social heart.

  • Over the next few decades, the club continued to grow on and off the field. In 2011, we moved to our new home at Keilor Park, a modern, multi-oval complex that remains the envy of the competition.

In 2013/14, PEGSCC launched its junior program, a transformative step that opened the club to the next generation of cricketers and strengthened our ties to the school. What began as a way to connect ex-students has evolved into a true community hub — embracing families, overseas players, and members from every walk of life.

From day one, the club’s purpose has been clear:

To give PEGS students and their mates a place to keep playing cricket together — and to welcome anyone who shares a love for the game.

While we’re proud of our roots as an “old boys” club, PEGS CC has always been inclusive. Many of our greatest contributors have come from outside the school, and we continue to embrace players of all backgrounds, skill levels, and aspirations.

Our goals:

  • Provide a pathway for juniors to develop through to senior cricket

  • Field competitive teams across all grades in the VTCA and MCC Club XI

  • Maintain a strong, inclusive club culture built on friendship, mentorship and community

  • Create opportunities for players, volunteers, and families to get involved and feel connected
